Ysgol Babanod y Tywyn was opened in 1971 to serve the needs of a fast growing RAF Station. Initially it was opened as an Infant's school and children transferred to the local Primary School at the age of 7. However, parents were not happy with this situation.
In 1995, parents organised a petition requesting a change of age range for the school. This petition was duly forwarded to the Welsh Office and in 1997, permission was granted for Ysgol Babanod y Tywyn to become a fully fledged Primary School and to change its name to Ysgol y Tywyn. An excellent example of parent power prevailing in our democratic society.
In 1997 the school also extended its provision to the Nursery sector. The age group had previously been catered for by a private RAF establishment. However, with the introduction of Nursery Vouchers, it became necessary for the school to provide pre-school education.
The school now teaches children from the age of 3 - 11.
Ysgol Y Tywyn has very close links with the RAF which provides the school with the majority of its pupils. At present 60% of the pupils are from families of military personnel stationed at Valley or civilian personnel working for the RAF. The RAF Padre visits the school once a week and conducts a morning service. Key Stage 2 children use the Station gym every Friday afternoon for their P.E. lessons. 50% of the Governing Body of the school are from the RAF community. The Nursery Class is situated in the school. The school itself is adjacent to the Station Training Centre, Families Club, Hive, Community Centre, NAAFI and is directly opposite the Officer's Mess. The Station Adventure Playground is next door to the school yard and children use this playground on a regular basis. The school liaises with the RAF Training Centre on educational initiatives and is grateful for all support provided Links with the RAF.

Agorwyd Ysgol Babanod y Tywyn ym 1971 i wasanaethu angen canolfan awyrlu a oedd yn datblygu'n gyflym. Yn wreiddiol, y plant ieuengaf yn unig oedd yn mynychu'r ysgol gan drosglwyddo yn saith oed i ysgol gynradd gyfagos. Sut bynnag am hynny, nid oedd y rhieni yn hapus gyda'r drefn fel ag yr oedd, ac felly ym 1995 trefnwyd deiseb yn gofyn am newid yn ystod oed yr ysgol. Anfonwyd y ddeiseb i'r Swyddfa Gymreig ac o ganlyniad ym 1995 rhoddwyd caniatad i Ysgol Babanod y Tywyn fynd yn Ysgol Gynradd ac i newid ei henw i Ysgol y Tywyn.
Ym 1997, ehangodd yr ysgol ei darpariaeth i gynnwys plant Meithrin hefyd. Cyn hyn roedd yr awyrlu yn darparu ar eu cyfer ond gyda dyfodiad y talebau, daeth yn angenrheidiol i'r ysgol fod yn gyfrifol am addysg cyn-ysgol. Felly erbyn heddiw mae'r ysgol yn addysgu plant 3 - 11 oed gyda'r Dosbarth Meithrin wedi ei leoli yn yr ysgol.
Ar hyn o bryd mae 60% o'r disgyblion yn dod o deuluoedd sydd a chysylltiadau agos a'r Awyrlu. Bydd y Padre yn ymweld a'r ysgol yn rheolaidd ac yn cynnal gwasanaeth boreuol. Bydd disgyblion Cyfnod Allweddol 2 yn defnyddio'r gampfa bob prynhawn Gwener. Daw 50% o aelodau'r Corff Llywodraethol o gymuned y Llu Awyr. Mae'r ysgol wedi ei lleoli yn agos i'r Ganolfan Hyfforddi, Clwb y Teulu, Yr Hive, Y Ganolfan Gymdeithasol a'r NAAFI ac mae gyferbyn a'r 'Officer's Mess'. Mae maes chwarae'r awyrlu drws nesaf i'r ysgol a bydd y plant yn ei ddefnyddio'n rheolaidd. Bydd y plant hynaf yn defnyddio' r Ganolfan Hyfforddi hefyd i bwrpas addysgiadol. Yn wir, mae'r ysgol yn hynod falch o'i chysylltiad a'r Awyrlu a'r gefnogaeth barod bob amser.
